How to Maintain Your Mini Split System

Apr 3rd 2016

Anyone who makes an investment into their home, wants to know how to maintain it best, to ensure the proper lifespan. We are constantly being asked what are the best ways to maintain my mini split air conditioner? Well the rules for maintenance for a mini split system are relatively simple, and there isn’t really much to do, but here is a break down of some of the things you can do.

Clean Your Filters

One of the easiest things you can do to ensure that your mini split air conditioner functions properly, is to clean the filters regularly. We’d recommend once a month as a good habit, and not only does it make sure air flow is good, but it also makes sure that your air quality is at its best possible level. So how do you clean them?

Most mini split systems will allow you to un-clip the front face plate, and just below them you will find the air filters. Remove the filters from the air conditioner and you’re ready for the next step. You’ve got two options for cleaning:

  • Use a vacuum to remove any dust or dirt, this is the simplest way to clean the filters.
  • Alternately, you can use water to rinse the filters. Rinse underneath the sink and make sure to remove all dirt, dust and dander. Once complete, allow to dry thoroughly before placing back into the air handler.

Check Refrigerant Levels

If your air conditioner is not performing properly, it is important to check refrigerant levels. One of the most common reasons for a system not performing properly is low levels of refrigerant. An HVAC technician can easily check pressure of the system and weight of the refrigerant to determine whether or not the system is properly charged. If you are low on refrigerant, simply adding the required refrigerant will bring your mini split back to new.
